The three most prevalent materials on the market, Seamless Aluminium, PVC, and Traditional Metal (Galvanised Steel), each offer distinct engineering advantages and distinct cost profiles.



1. Seamless Aluminium Gutters


Aluminium has become the industry benchmark for modern residential and commercial developments. Typically extruded directly on-site from mobile roll-forming machines, these gutters offer a continuous channel free of mid-run seams.  


  • Cost (Supply & Install): Mid-to-High tier. Expect to budget between R250 and R350 per linear metre for standard domestic profiles, inclusive of professional installation.  


  • Benefits: The absence of joins minimizes the potential for leaks. Aluminium naturally forms a protective oxide layer, making it completely rust-proof. It is lightweight, structurally stable, and comes pre-coated in a variety of durable, UV-resistant colours. 

     

  • Maintenance: Low. Because there are no joints or seams to reseal, maintenance is generally limited to clearing organic debris (leaves and silt) from the tracks.  


  • Durability: High. Seamless aluminium systems easily achieve a lifespan of 20 to 30 years, even when exposed to harsh, salt-heavy coastal air.  


2. PVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) Gutters


PVC is a popular, budget-friendly option, particularly for DIY projects and affordable housing developments. It is installed as a sectional system utilizing rubber-gasketed clips and unions to join lengths together.  


  • Cost (Supply & Install): Low. Total installed rates average between R70 and R100 per linear metre, though component prices drop significantly if purchased directly from suppliers for self-installation.


  • Benefits: PVC is 100% corrosion-proof and highly resistant to denting from impact. The material is lightweight and fast to install using a modular snap-together system.


  • Maintenance: Moderate. While the plastic itself requires no painting, the rubber seals in the union joints degrade over time due to thermal expansion and contraction. These joints require periodic inspection and replacement to prevent dripping.


  • Durability: Low-to-Moderate. Standard PVC is highly susceptible to UV degradation. Under intense sunlight, the material can become brittle and crack over time. The typical functional lifespan ranges from 10 to 15 years.


3. Metal Gutters (Galvanised Steel / Colorlume)


Traditional steel gutters provide exceptional mechanical strength. Modern iterations are treated with a zinc coating (galvanised) or a pre-painted zinc-aluminium alloy coating (such as Colorlume) to improve corrosion resistance.  


  • Cost (Supply & Install): Broad range. Standard galvanised or domestic steel gutters run between R120 and R160 per linear metre installed, while specialized heavier gauges or industrial profiles scale significantly higher.  


  • Benefits: Unmatched structural rigidity. Metal gutters handle heavy snow loads, violent downpours, and physical impacts (such as leaning ladders) without sagging or bending.


  • Maintenance: High. Sectional steel gutters rely on soldered or sealed joints that must be monitored. If the protective zinc or paint coating is scratched or compromised, raw steel is exposed to moisture and will rapidly rust. They require periodic clearing, rust-treatment touch-ups, and eventual repainting.


  • Durability: Moderate-to-High. In dry, inland environments, a well-maintained galvanised steel system can last 15 to 25 years. However, in humid or coastal zones, their lifespan drops drastically as airborne salinity accelerates rust.

  • Choose Aluminium if you want a long-term, fit-and-forget solution with clean aesthetics and excellent coastal performance. It offers the best return on investment (ROI) over the lifecycle of a permanent structure.


  • Choose PVC for tight project budgets, temporary structures, or straightforward DIY installations where upfront cost minimization is the driving factor.


  • Choose Galvanised Steel for heavy-duty industrial applications or inland areas prone to severe weather conditions where absolute physical strength and rigidity are required.
