The last thing you need right now is a burst geyser, so we have 3 signs to keep in mind that are an indication that a geyser is about to burst.

A burst geyser can cause a lot of damage. Not only will the geyser have to be replaced, but a lot of damage to ceilings, walls and flooring can be experienced as well. It doesn’t have to get to this as there are usually a few warning signs to look out for before it happens. Being alert to these signs can help you take preventative action before it is too late:
1. Hard Dripping Water Outside The Home
Hard dripping from the geyser pipe outside. Don’t confuse this with the normal dripping from the geyser overflow pipe. The dripping to look out for will come from the thicker white 50mm PVC pipe.
2. Water Marks Showing On The Ceiling
Watermarks on the ceiling. There should be no water contact with your ceiling boards, so the sudden appearance of new spots or patches is a sign of trouble.
3. Dirty Water Flowing Out Of The Hot Water Tap
Dirty water coming out of your hot water tap. Brown or rusty water suddenly coming through your hot taps is another warning sign that you should not ignore.
If you observe any of these symptoms or early warning signs, contact your plumber immediately. Do not delay or postpone this as it is an indication that the geyser could burst at any time.
What To Do In The Event Of A Burst Geyser
• Shut off the water at the mains.
• Turn off the power to the geyser.
• Open the hot water taps to relieve the pressure of the geyser.
• Limit the damage as much as possible using buckets and cloths.
• Call your plumber and ask him to send a quote/invoice through to your insurance company immediately.
Before you forget these steps in a moment of panic, print them out and stick them onto your electrical distribution board so it's handy in the unfortunate event of a burst geyser.
